What it is

Ugadi (Yugadi, “beginning of an age”) falls on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. Homes are cleaned and decorated with mango leaves and rangoli, and the year’s almanac (Panchanga Shravanam) is read aloud.

Traditional significance

Ugadi pachadi blends six tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent, a reminder that life brings every flavour and each can be met with balance.

History and culture

The same day is celebrated as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and Cheti Chand by the Sindhi community.

A suggested practice

Six tastes of the year · about 5 minutes

  1. Write the six tastes down a page.
  2. Beside each, note an experience from the past year that matches it.
  3. Read the list and notice that you came through all of them.

Affirmation

I meet every flavour of life with balance.

Reflection question

Which “taste” do I hope the new year brings more of?
