What it is
Ram Navami celebrates the birth of Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu, in Ayodhya. The main worship is at midday (Madhyahna), the time of his birth.
Traditional significance
Rama is honoured as the ideal of dharma: truthfulness, duty, compassion and steadiness in hardship. Devotees read the Ramayana, sing bhajans and chant Rama’s name.
History and culture
Celebrations are especially large in Ayodhya, at Bhadrachalam in Telangana, and in temples across India, often with processions and a symbolic wedding of Rama and Sita.
