What it is
On Shravana Purnima a sister ties a rakhi on her brother’s wrist, and he promises to protect and support her. Today the bond is celebrated between all siblings, cousins and close friends.
Traditional significance
The thread is a symbol of love, care and the promise to stand by each other. The rakhi is traditionally tied in the afternoon, outside the Bhadra period.
History and culture
Stories include Draupadi binding Krishna’s wounded finger with a strip of her sari, and Krishna’s promise to protect her.
