What it is
Puthandu marks the Tamil New Year, when the Sun enters Mesha. Homes are decorated with kolam, and many families view auspicious items on waking, as at Vishu.
Traditional significance
Mango pachadi, combining sweet, sour and bitter, reminds us that the year will bring every kind of experience.
History and culture
The new year’s almanac (panchangam) is read in temples and homes.
