What it is

Thai Pongal falls on the first day of the Tamil month Thai, when the Sun enters Makara. Families cook new rice with milk and jaggery in a clay pot outdoors until it boils over, calling “Pongalo Pongal!”

Traditional significance

The overflowing pot is a symbol of abundance and gratitude. The offering is made to Surya, the Sun, for the harvest and for the year ahead.

History and culture

The celebration runs over several days: Bhogi (clearing out the old), Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal (honouring cattle) and Kaanum Pongal (visiting family and friends).

A suggested practice

An overflowing gratitude list · about 5 minutes

  1. Write the words “Thank you for…” at the top of a page.
  2. List everything that comes, without stopping, until the page feels full.
  3. Read it back slowly, as an offering.

Affirmation

My heart overflows with thanks.

Reflection question

Which quiet helpers made my last year possible?
