What it is
Thiruvonam is the day the Thiruvonam (Shravana) nakshatra prevails in the Malayalam month of Chingam. It is the main day of a festival season that begins ten days earlier on Atham, with a flower carpet (pookalam) growing larger each day.
Traditional significance
Onam welcomes the beloved King Mahabali (Maveli), whose reign is remembered as a time of equality and plenty. Families share the Onasadya feast on banana leaves, and play, sing and dance (Thiruvathirakali).
History and culture
The story tells of Vamana, the dwarf avatar of Vishnu, who humbled Mahabali, granting him a yearly visit to his people. Snake-boat races (vallam kali) are held on Kerala’s backwaters.
