What it is

Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, at midnight in Mathura. Devotees fast, sing bhajans, read stories of Krishna’s childhood and welcome him at midnight.

Traditional significance

Krishna is loved as the playful child of Gokul, the friend and guide of Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita, and a symbol of divine love.

History and culture

In Maharashtra, Dahi Handi (Gopalkala) is celebrated the next day as human pyramids reach for a pot of curd. Smarta and Vaishnava (ISKCON) communities sometimes observe it on different days.

A suggested practice

A midnight moment · about 5 minutes

  1. Before bed, sit by a lamp or candle (safely).
  2. Recall a moment of pure joy from childhood.
  3. Rest in that feeling, and invite more playfulness into your life.

Affirmation

I welcome love, joy and wisdom into my heart.

Reflection question

Where could a little more playfulness heal something in me?
