What it is

Diwali’s main day is Lakshmi Puja, held in the evening (Pradosh) on the Amavasya. Homes are cleaned, decorated with rangoli and filled with rows of diyas and lights.

Traditional significance

Light is welcomed into the darkest night of the month: knowledge over ignorance, hope over despair. Goddess Lakshmi is invited for prosperity, along with Ganesha for wisdom.

History and culture

Diwali remembers Rama’s return to Ayodhya, and in the South Krishna’s victory over Narakasura. Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas and Jains remember Lord Mahavira’s nirvana around the same time.

A suggested practice

One lamp for one person · about 5 minutes

  1. Light a diya or candle (safely).
  2. Hold someone in your thoughts who is going through a dark time.
  3. Wish them light, and if you can, reach out to them.

Affirmation

I welcome light into my home and my heart.

Reflection question

Where can I bring light to someone else this season?
