What it is

Dhanteras falls on Trayodashi of the waning Moon in Kartika (Purnimanta), observed in the evening (Pradosh). It opens the five days of Diwali.

Traditional significance

It is Dhanvantari Jayanti, honouring the divine physician associated with Ayurveda, and a day to pray for health. Many families buy a new utensil or metal item as a sign of prosperity, and light a lamp for Yama (Yamadeepdaan) at the doorway.

History and culture

Stories include the appearance of Dhanvantari from the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) carrying the pot of amrita.

A suggested practice

Bless your health · about 5 minutes

  1. Sit quietly and thank each part of your body that served you this year.
  2. Choose one small healthy habit for the season ahead.
  3. Light a lamp (safely) as a promise to care for yourself.

Affirmation

Health is my true wealth, and I care for it gently.

Reflection question

What does my body need from me this season?
